There's a component in them which handles the spikes. An even better thing to get is a power conditioner. This is like a UPS (see below) but w/o any batteries. This prevents your computer from going down for a time during a blackout, and should make the computer not notice brown-outs and spikes.

C Call-outs
Plug the component OUTS into the adaptors when you want to use the component, and swap as necessary. Of course, you'll want to keep the ends of the cable in a place where you can get to them. and keep them from magnetic fields. This works best if you have a component you don't use very often, but it does work.

The Sony DVD doesn't have component outs ...Which is immaterial as your TV doesn't have component inputs... My question has a few parts to it. Connected with this is how you set the output on my DVD player - I think RGB and S-Vid are the options, and both seem to work over the S-Vid cable.

Sorry, no keying :-( The Digisuite LE (or LE MAX) can do all of the above ins and outs, and using Incite software it can take any input and mix it with 2 streams of video but you may have to give up deck emulation (there is a plugin for Incite, but they are having trouble getting it to work with everything.
